Individual Fitness: goal making and heart rate moniteering

Chalet Hill, taken from about a quarter of the way up
Grade Level:  High School

Objective: Students will gain a greater understanding of their bodies and current fitness levels through monitoring their heart rate.  Students will set goals for the semester and begin logging their physical activity.

Today, the high school students and I focused on our heart-rates, monitoring our bodies, and checking our heart rates.  We rested in the library, checked our heart rates, ran up "chalet hill," checked our heart rates, rested, checked our heart rates, jumped rope for a minute, then checked our heart rates.  We recorded our data in our fitness journals and worked on goal setting.

In the past, we've always had PE but to my knowledge the element of monitoring, recording, and reflecting is a new component in the school's physical education program.

It's my hope that this semester, we not only develop a habit of physical activity but a greater awareness of that activity and the effect it (and other decisions) have on our body.

For example today, one student was surprised by how high his resting heart rate was until halfway up our hill run he remembered the four cups of coffee he'd drank during the school day.

I'm excited about trying new things and tracking our progress.
