Objective: To learn what distinguishes birds from the rest of the animal kingdom and to practice grouping and observing like scientists.
Today we:
-Discussed how scientists not only do experiments, they also make observations and categorize plants and animals
-Talked about the parts of a bird and discussed the sole part that no other type of animal has (feathers: squids have beaks, bats and insects have wings but no other animal has feathers)
-Learned the parts of a feather, while feeling and observing a variety of different kinds of feathers (including an owl feather)
-Looked at the "barbs" and "barbules" of feathers under a microscope
-Partnered up for a down feather activity where one partner closed his/her eyes and the other placed down feathers on the hands of the partner with the closed eyes. The partner with the closed eyes opened his/her eyes when he/she felt feathers (which usually took a while.) We used this activity to discuss the lightness and warmth of the down feathers birds have on their bodies.
-Observed and sketched birds nests, looking at them for patterns and the presence of human-made objects
