Grade Level: High School
In "Individual Fitness" students will:
-Set at least one fitness goal for each quarter.
-Discuss both their goal and their plans for achieving it with their instructor
-Keep individual fitness journals, recording their daily physical activity
-Attend two to three PE classes per week
It is my desire to make this class as student-centered as possible. I want us to be ambitious with our goals and dedicated in our pursuit of them. It's my hope that you leave this class feeling accomplished and fitter, with a pattern of fitness and a rhythm of regular exercise.
I also want us to take advantage of Holden's unique setting, rather than allowing it to hinder us. I want to use the community and the trails to our advantage, capitalizing on our wilderness location and the village's enthusiastic staff of athletic and versatile volunteers.
I will collect your fitness journals throughout the semester so that we can be in regular conversation about your progress.
Students are expected to:
(For example: Running a personal best 5K time, participating in a 10K road race, walking to 10 Mile Falls three days a week, hiking once a week, learning how to cross country ski, successfully traversing the boulder on 10 Mile, exercising 5-6 times a week, participating in one village game of basketball a week, etc.)
-Keep track of their physical activity throughout the week
-Dress comfortably and appropriately for Physical Education on Monday, Wednesday, and (possibly) Friday afternoons
Students will be evaluated on:
-The effort you put into setting and attaining your fitness goals
-The thoroughness, thought, and reflection I see in your journal
-The earnestness of your participation in class activities
A Note:
Should you ever feel nervous or unsafe doing any physical activity, please stop immediately and let me know. I value your safety, your confidence, and your sense of well being more than I value any activity I plan for class. :)
I look forward to spending time with you this upcoming school year!
